As of October 7th, 2019 Apple’s macOS Catalina is available to download. Here are some of the newest features include:

  • Apple Arcade
  • New Entertainment Apps:
    • Apple Music
    • Apple Podcast
    • Apple TV
  • Sidecar (now you can use your iPad as a 2nd display)
  • Accessibility improvements
  • And a lot more…

At the writing of this posts I’m in the process of upgrading my iMac to Catalina to test one of what I feel will be the greatest features to increase productivity; Sidecar.

It’s somewhat surprisingly that Apple hasn’t introduced this feature in the past but the ability to use an iPad as a secondary display is something that I feel has been an overlooked feature for far to long. Per the Sidecar Tech Brief there are some limitation on what hardware and devices will be supported.

Here is the current Sidecar-supported Mac Models:

  • MacBook introduced in 2016 or later
  • MacBook Air introduced in 2018 or later
  • MacBook Pro introduced in 2016 or later
  • Mac mini introduced in 2018 or later
  • iMac introduced in late 2015 or later
  • iMac Pro introduced in 2017 or later
  • Mac Pro introduced in 2019

Sidecar-supported iPad models:

  • 12.9-inch iPad Pro
  • 11-inch iPad Pro
  • 10.5-inch iPad Pro
  • 9.7-inch iPad Pro
  • iPad (6th generation or later)
  • iPad mini (5th generation)
  • iPad Air (3rd generation)

For my test I will be using a Late 2015 iMac with a 12.9-inch iPad pro and will make sure to provide an update on my overall impression of the practical usage of Sidecar and if it’s worth the hype. Stay tuned!
